The objective of this project is to design a new two-lane bridge to replace the existing Matlacha Bridge within the existing corridor. A new bridge on an alternate corridor is not included in the scope of this project.

Existing Bridge 1
Matlacha Bridge

The existing Matlacha Bridge is a single span bascule (moveable) bridge which provides the only vehicular access from Matlacha and the mainland to the Greater Pine Islands over Matlacha Pass in Charlotte Harbor. This two lane bridge carries one lane of vehicular traffic in each direction. The existing bridge is considered to be "functionally obsolete" in part due to narrow lanes and the absence of shoulders. The current roadway width is not adequate to maintain two lanes of traffic if a vehicle breaks down on the bridge. In addition, the bridge has deteriorated as a result of exposure to salt water.

A previous study, conducted by the County concluded that construction of a new bridge was more cost effective than to continually repair the existing bridge. Although the study indicated that the existing bridge could provide 15 more years of service, continuing repairs are not only expensive but could result in unanticipated traffic disruption.
